Welcome!

Denise M. Hurst, MSW, LICSW

My name is Denise M. Hurst and on November 5, 2013, I was re-elected to a 2nd term to the Springfield School Committee At Large. This victory is truly humbling. I could not have been victorious without the tireless energy and work put it in by so many of the volunteers. A heartfelt thanks to all who assisted in making this campaign a success.

In 2009, I was elected to my first four year term to the Springfield School Committee. I currently serve as Chair of the Curriculum and Programs subcommittee and have done so for the last 3 ½ years. Under this subcommittee, Anti-Bullying policies were vetted and recommended to the whole committee for approval, as well as the implementation of new and engaging literature for students designed to increase their interest in reading. In addition, I was a two time delegate at the annual Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) conference, as well as an MASC delegate to the 2013 National School Boards Association in San Diego, CA.

I was born and raised in the great City of Springfield, MA and I am a proud graduate of Springfield Central High School, University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Springfield College. My husband, Attorney Justin J. Hurst, also a Springfield native, and I, are committed to living and raising our two year old son, Justin Jr., in Springfield.

I have been steadfast in my commitment to advocate for families, children, school staff and concerned citizens of Springfield. I believe all of the children currently enrolled in the Springfield Public School System and the many that will follow, need to be afforded the same quality education that I and my husband received as graduates from the Springfield Public School System.

My priorities are to ensure that every child feels safe when entering their school building, that we increase academic achievement, provide a highly qualified and diverse faculty and staff throughout the system, and work collaboratively with families and community.
