Who is School Committeewoman Denise M. Hurst?

Denise M. Hurst is running for re-election to the Springfield School Committee At Large. In 2009, Denise was elected to her first four year term to the Springfield School Committee. During her time on the school committee, she has supported policies for improved student and teacher attendance, state mandated anti-bullying regulations, parent and community engagement and new and relevant curriculum. Denise’s priorities remain centered on improving student achievement, increasing the graduation rate and decreasing the drop-out rate.


Over the last eight years, Denise has been dedicated to her professional development as a school committee member and has become active with the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC). She advocates on the local, statewide and national level for adequate funding for public schools and is the inaugural Chair of the MASC Minority Caucus. In 2013, Denise was awarded the All State School Committee Member award for the MASC Urban Division.


Although, much has been accomplished there is still more work to do. Denise believes that every child in our community should be afforded a quality education and is committed more than ever to making it a reality!


Denise was born and raised in the great City of Springfield, MA and is a proud graduate of Springfield Central High School, University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Springfield College.
